A chiller is the upgrade that turns cold plunging from a chore into a habit. Instead of buying and dumping ice every session, you pair a chiller with any tub, set a temperature, and the water is cold and clean every single morning. This guide covers whether you need one, how to size it, and which to buy.

Do you actually need a chiller?

Run the math on your own routine:

  • Daily plunger: yes. At 20-40 lb of ice per session, daily ice costs $60-150/month. A chiller pays for itself in 1-2 years and removes all the hassle.
  • A few times a week: maybe. Ice is cheaper if you plunge 2-3 times a week, but a chiller still wins on convenience and water hygiene.
  • Occasional / seasonal: probably not. If you plunge now and then, a bag of ice in an insulated tub is simpler and cheaper.

A chiller also filters and (usually) sanitizes the water, so you are not draining and refilling constantly - a real quality-of-life difference ice baths do not offer.

The Penguin Chillers 1/4 HP unit is the cheapest real chiller worth owning. It is slower to pull down large volumes and has no built-in filter, but for a single user with a small, well-insulated tub it does the core job - cold water, every day, no ice - for far less money.

How to size a chiller

  • Match HP to tub volume. Roughly: 1/4 HP suits small tubs up to ~100 gallons; 1/2-1 HP handles standard 80-150 gallon plunges and multi-user recovery. Undersize it and it runs constantly without ever getting cold enough.
  • Insulation multiplies HP. A well-insulated tub lets a smaller chiller hold temperature easily. A bare tub in a hot garage can defeat even a 1 HP unit. Insulate first.
  • Direct-cool vs. heat-exchange. Titanium coils are safe for direct contact with your plunge water. Avoid any chiller using materials not rated for direct water contact.
  • Running cost. A chiller sips power holding temperature in an insulated tub - typically a few dollars a month - and spikes only while pulling the water back down after a plunge.

Bottom line

If you plunge most days, a chiller is the single best money you can spend on cold therapy - it removes the one thing that makes people quit (dealing with ice). Get the Polar Monkeys 1HP for full-size or shared tubs, or the Penguin 1/4 HP if you are on a budget with a small insulated tub. Pair either with any tub from our cold plunge tub guide.
